暗夜纪年主要描述的是和现实世界相容的异常世界。虽然资料零散，但想用现实世界的人完全能够接受的方式来解释异常世界，并把众多现成的未解之谜纳入自己的世界观加以解释、或把已有的解释融入自己的世界，包括借用许多现成的约束，比如死徒的概念，宗教、魔术、神话的体系等等。如果说自解释可以维持世界观神秘感的话，那么现实相容的特性则可以为世界观增加存在感。
